Comparisons between NBC’s The Playboy Club, the new 1960s-set series that takes place at the first Playboy Club in Chicago, and Mad Men were perhaps inevitable, but the producers and cast of the period drama were on hand at the fall TV previews on Monday to downplay any similarities. “The comparison to Mad Men ends at the era,” executive producer Ian Biederman said. “This is a much different show with a much different energy.”

Parents Television Council calls for NBC affiliates to drop The Playboy Club

Before the series has even premiered, the show has drawn attention for its name alone, causing the Parents Television Council to question whether a show based on one of the largest adult entertainment industries would be suitable on primetime television. At least one NBC affiliate, Salt Lake City’s KSL, has opted to not carry the program, which will be shown in that market by KMYU, the local My Network TV affiliate.

But the producers say it’s…

Jesse Ventura and Ashton Kutcher

TruTV is going undercover and behind the scenes of some of the country’s craziest professions for its newest crop of projects.

Among the cable channel’s new series are Limo Bob, which examines life in Chicago through the eyes of the owner of one of the city’s biggest limo fleets. Ma’s Roadhouse will profile the family behind a one-of-a-kind Texas saloon, which serves as a motorcycle shop, bar and tattoo parlor. Putting a whole new spin on Undercover Boss is America’s Toughest Boss, which will profile a steakhouse owner willing to spy on his employees and put them to extreme tests to get the results he wants.

America’s Toughest Boss won’t be the only TruTV show employing hidden cameras. Exposed!, the latest comedy project from Punk’d producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg, will catch unsuspecting people’s reactions on camera when others take off their clothes in public. Hidden-camera show Rogue Society showcases individuals going undercover to get revenge on scam artists and crooked businessmen.

TruTV’s other new series include Disclosure, which looks at two people who have dedicated their lives to uncovering government secrets, and The Naked Office, which employs a very revealing form of group therapy to keep employees productive and positive.

In addition to the channel’s new series, TruTV has ordered new seasons of Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura, Full Throttle Saloon, Black Gold, Las Vegas Jailhouse, and Rehab: Party at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Will you tune into TruTV’s new shows?

Meinhardt Raabe, Munchkin Coroner From The Wizard of Oz, Dead at 94

Meinhardt Raabe

Meinhardt Raabe, who played the Munchkin coroner who proclaimed the Wicked Witch of the East dead in The Wizard of Oz, has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 94.

Raabe, one of the few surviving Munchkins from the film, died Friday morning at Orange Park Medical Center in Florida, his caregiver, Cindy Bosnyak, told the AP. Bosnyak said he complained of a sore throat at his retirement community before collapsing and going into cardiac arrest. He later died at the hospital.

Raabe was one of 124 Munchkins in the film and one of only nine with speaking roles. He famously pronounced the witch dead after Dorothy’s farmhouse landed on her: “As coroner, I must aver, I thoroughly examined her, and she’s not only merely dead, she’s really most sincerely dead.”

Born in Watertown, Wis. in 1915, Raabe performed at world fairs such as the Chicago World’s Fair and the San Diego Exposition before The Wizard of Oz began shooting in 1938. He was 22 at the time of shooting and earned money for college by performing.

Raabe was 3 1/2 feet tall in Oz and grew to about 4 1/2 feet. He toured the country in the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile for 30 years as “Little Oscar, the World’s Smallest Chef.”

Raabe regularly attended the annual OzFest in Chittenango, N.Y., and co-authored a book in 2005, Memories of a Munchkin: An Illustrated Walk Down the Yellow Brick Road. He was one of seven surviving Munchkins present when the Munchkins received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

“There is nothing in the picture that dates it,” he told the AP in 1988 of The Wizard of Oz’s success. “It’s a fantasy picture that will be fantasy for generations to come.”

Raabe’s wife of more than 50 years, Marie Hartline, died in a car crash in 1997.

Oprah

A Toronto woman received a big surprise when she attended a taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show Thursday: No, not a new car; she went into labor!

Lori McCrindle, who was 27 weeks pregnant, went into premature labor during a taping when her water broke in the bathroom. Winfrey halted taping and ran off the set while the mother-to-be was loaded into an ambulance and rushed to a Chicago hospital. McCrindle gave birth to a baby boy named Justin less than an hour later. Winfrey discussed the ordeal on her show Friday.

“He was born about 20 minutes after I saw you,” McCrindle told Winfrey on Friday. “You helped me through.” The new mom, whose son weighed in at just 2 pounds and 13 ounces, said Justin was doing well, but undergoing a lot of tests.

“After all these years, it is not too often we have a first. But yesterday was a doozy,” Winfrey said.
