Cee Lo Green had the chance to join Simon Cowell on his highly anticipated singing competition series, The X Factor, but he said no. Instead, he joined NBC’s rival, The Voice. Why did he turn down one of the most famous judges in reality TV history?
“I was unfamiliar with the concept of X Factor,” Green told reporters Friday at NBC’s Summer Press Day.
To hear Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine tell it, NBC’s upcoming singing competition The Voice will be nothing like American Idol.
For one thing, there will be no mean-spirited judges. For another, there will be no “judges.”
“I think it’s less about being judgmental and more about helping the singers out,” he said Tuesday during a press conference. “That’s kind of a dirty word, here on The Voice… Judge. Judging.”

Martin is best known for composing the score to the 1944 musical Meet Me In St. Louis, in which Judy Garland famously performs the song that became a seasonal classic.
