Betty White

Mark your calendars and set your TiVos: Betty White will host Saturday Night Live on May 8 — and she’s bringing some other funny ladies with her.

Joining the Golden Girl for the special Mother’s Day episode are six former SNL players, most of whom are moms: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch.

Betty White will appear on Saturday Night Live

At 88, White will be the show’s oldest host ever, and the gig will also mark her first time as host — a debut that was a long time coming. SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels tells USA Today that he has “always wanted” the beloved comedienne to host, but White turned him down three times.

“It’s so New York, and I’m not New York at all,” she says. “But my agent said he’d divorce me if I didn’t do it, and I love my agent.”

The Facebook campaign imploring SNL to book White “took on a groundswell” following her Super Bowl Snickers commercial, Michael says, and “validated that, ‘Oh, that’d be fun.’”

“It isn’t something we would have said no to,” he says. “It was the outpouring of affection from fans, and we feel the same way.”

While White has no children of her own — except for Pontiac, her golden retriever — Michaels says she’s the perfect Mother’s Day host because “she’s the mother of us all in comedy, so it will be a celebration of Betty White.”

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation has been renewed early for next season, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

The Amy Poehler-led sitcom, which takes a behind-the-scenes look at small town bureaucracy in an Indiana-area parks department, debuted to an impressive 6.8 million viewers and a 3.0 rating in the 18-to-49 demo in April 2009 before dipping to 4.24 million viewers and a rating of 2.0 for its first season finale in May.

In its second year, the series has found its footing with both fans and critics, enjoying a small ratings uptick and a big increase in positive buzz. The show’s most recent new episode brought in 4.37 million viewers and a 2.0 rating on Jan. 21.

The sophomore series — part of NBC’s Thursday night comedy block — was created by two of the executive producers behind fellow NBC sitcom The Office, Greg Daniels and Michael Schur.
