When Maura Tierney makes her return to TV, it will be in a role tailor-made for her.

The 45-year-old actress, who last season dropped out of NBC’s Parenthood to undergo breast cancer treatment, recently replaced Joely Richardson on ABC’s upcoming legal drama The Whole Truth. But even though she’s the second actress to get the part, she was the first person creator and executive producer Tom Donaghy wanted for the role.

Maura Tierney finds The Whole Truth at ABC

“I’d been seeing a lot of female characters on television that weren’t strong in the way that … women can be strong and also feminine,” Donaghy said at the Television Critics Association’s fall TV previews. “I knew Maura had the elegance and … wit. So, I wrote it with her talents in mind, never thinking she would be available.”

Although Tierney joked that her ego led her to take on the role, she was somewhat reserved in discussing her health…

July 22nd, 2010

Holly Robinson Peete on 'Lopez Tonight'Holly Robinson Peete admits she wasn’t “Miss Congeniality” on ‘The Celebrity Apprentice,’ as evidenced by the conflict between her and Cyndi Lauper. But she loves and admires her former cast-mate.

The runner-up explains on ‘Lopez Tonight’ (weeknights, 11PM ET on TBS) that the show is “a lot harder than it looks on TV. You have a very small window of time to complete these tasks. They put you with people who get on your last nerve.”

Speaking of which, she says, “There’s a little learning curve with reality [TV] … Sometimes the editor is the writer. If you give them eye rolls and neck twists, they will cut to it. But I love Cyndi … I really do respect her.” The actress then went on to compare Lauper to Sly Stone, Peete’s favorite musical icon.

Seven Emmy-Worthy TV Shows Within TV Shows

July 18th, 2010

Emmy statueEvery year, the Academy of Television Arts and Science hands out hundreds of Emmys in categories that cover every inch of TV minutiae except “Best use of eyebrows by a cable newscaster” and “Best catering.” One major category of meta-TV awesomeness, however, has been unjustly ignored by the Academy: shows within shows.

These fictional blocks of television programming creep up in a variety of situations — a character may work as a TV personality in the narrative, or we may just see characters watching the tube while they’re chilling on couch. They may fill up just 30 seconds of screen time, but shows within shows have to be flawless in order to drive the story and serve their often-comedic purposes. So here’s our attempt to recognize the best TV shows within TV shows.

May I have the envelope, please?
